Your in luck. Every thing you need to know is right here. http://www.dixieline.com/Sprinkler_System/sprinklersystem1.html
http://www.sprinklerwarehouse.com/LawnCare/NewSprinklers.asp
These two sites are a result of a yahoo search using the phrase "installing a sprinkler system".
Good luck, it really is an easy task, the hardest part is digging the trenches to lay your pipe.
My timers are 24 volts with a transformer built-in to the cord that plugs into the standard 120v outlet.

the easiest way and cheapest is if you have an outside water spigot you can use that .go to home depot and they will hook you up with everything you need.the hardest part is regulating the spray of the sprinkler heads.a very small tool comes with them put it on your key chain.you will have to adjust the heads a few times before you get the righ arc or spray you want.you don't have to bury the pipes more than 6 inches .i put in a system on a lawn the size of a football field and didn't bury them more than 6in.in the spring they went right back on.

put in as a lot piping as available commencing on the fartherest element with as many sprinklers as available and placed hose connections on the pipes. you could continuously make higher the pipes to the water source later. Then placed the hoses on low cost timers. Your backyard will seem a lot extra constructive even as watered uniformly and frequently.

go to lowes, get a grid map thing in the garden center. map out your property, including everything you can. then send it off to toro or orbit, or rainbird or whatever namebrand the grid is and who you are going to get your products through and they will map out a system conssitent with yours and tell you every product you need to buy and then follow their instructions. it is really hard work, but you can save thousands of dollars by doing it yourself. do a poly system instead of pvc, it is extremely easier and is less likely to crack if frozen.

Be careful when using water with electricity..but electricity is the last thing that you would hook up to your timer. Sorry I could`nt answer this and my hubby would know but he is asleep!!!
