It adds value to the CD. Because CD sales are so high in the US, if they released bonus material in the US, it'd flood the market with them, and hardly make that release special.

By making it harder for the biggest consumers of CD's to gain access to the bonus track material, it adds value to those bonus tracks in the largest market (ie. The US) and therefore the record label makes more money.

I think it depends on the artist. Doesn't really matter though, since anyone can just say the last song in their cd is a bonus track. I guess you can still trick people in other countries to buy a cd if it has a "bonus track."

It's been like that for as long as I can remember I bought every album by The Rolling Stones US & UK releases all the UK copies have more songs then the US ones. Same goes for The Beatles so that goes back to at least as far as 1962. Just like I have a couple of Japanese imports on vinyl that sound better then any CD I have.

probably because they want to save some "previously unreleased" stuff to put on a greatest hits album or a "rare" tracks cd or a box set...just a way of getting you to buy something else on down the line.

US CD's do have bonus tracks. Look closer. :) Maybe you're just looking at the CD's that don't.

It's a marketing strategy to allow consumers more choices, and to attract potential customers who wants to buy the album, but have not do so :)
