A friend of mine is thinking of naming her son Alexandra (not Alexander). She just prefers the spelling and the way Alexandra looks and sounds over Alexander and its her favorite name.

What do you think? Big mistake? No big deal? Will many people notice (they sound so similar and I expect the kid will go by Al or Alex most of the time anyway).

He will probably go by Alex, but that's no reason to arm bullies with ammunition by giving HIM a GIRL'S name. I think that's awful!!!

People will notice. Alexandra and Alexandrea are both female names, they are not unisex and the child will be made fun of.

If she is just going to call the baby Alex name him Alex or Alexander, save the kid some trouble.

You can name a boy Alexandra but think about someyears later when all his classmates will be laughing on him and saying "You have a girl's name!!!".Imagine even when he gets a job,his colleagues wouldn't be a lot better than the school-mates.Just give him a normal name and that's it.I have 4 daughters and 3 sons. All of them have typical girl's and boy's names. They are Jennifer,Robert, Kateline,John, Emma,Benjamin and Sandra. Can you make such a mistake as imagine Emma is a boy and Robert is a girl?!No,of course, because when you hear these names you imagine the boy or the girl. You are always sure you are talking about a boy or about a girl.Imagine what would you say to your niece and newphew "Kids, your cousin's name is Alexandra."And then show them the boy. They won't understand anything and you will have to explain ridiculous things.

Is she hoping for a girl because Alexandra is a girls name no matter if she likes it or not she is being selfish and not thinking of her child, why would she be that clueless, thoughtless and just plain mean to her child. they don't even sound similar "a" , "er" big difference!!! I guess she is going with the Hollywood trend like naming a baby "Apple" now that's mean!! How would she like to be called George not Georgia. Tell her she really needs to think about this and do what is best for the child as they get enough grief from other things and their name should not be something they should have to defend!!!!

It is a big deal. Alexandra is a girls name. A big time girl's name. Your friend is stupid to even think about naming her son that name. What is wrong with her. Is she an educated person because if she was she wouldn't even consider doing that. You need to talk her out of it. Her son would hate her when he gets older and will get teased non stop while in school. Please, don't let her do it.

Yikes. I would worry that the poor boy would be teased. It's one thing for a girl to have a uni-sex or masculine sounding name (i.e. Bobbie, Sam, etc.) but it's a completely different story for a boy to have a feminine name. Regardless of whether or not she ever planned on calling him Alexandra the teachers would say Alexandra during roll-call. (How embarrassing for him!)

Honestly, I can see how it could be a problem for the kid when he's in school, since usually on the first day of classes the teachers call role by using their given names and not nicknames...I'm sure he'll get some ribbing. But knowing how some people are about naming their kids, she probably won't change her mind!

Last time I check Alexandra was a girl's name. I don't reccommend naming your son with a girl name. He'll get teased later in school and people will think to themselves "What was the mother thinking? Didn't she know she was going to give birth to a boy?"

Seriously, I hope your friend reconsiders. Alexandra is a lovely name... for a girl. I have a friend named Mitchell (we all call him Mitch). I think it's a cool name, but I would never name my daughter Mitchell.

How about Alexandre for her son? Maybe your friend could check into changing her name to Alexandra.

Oh believe me EVERYONE will notice and think she made a blunder or couldn't spell. Then when she says *well I just liked it better* they will think she was stupid.

Change the spelling on Alexander to Alexandre then but give the poor boy a boy's name not a girls.
