Newspapers, at least in the past, were less interested in your personal or moral background than in your ability and experience as a journalist. Broadcasting, I realize, my be different, but there are many--in fact more--jobs behind the scene in TV than in front of the camera where your background may be unimportant. I worked with a police reporter on my newspaper who had spent some time in prison. It gave him a distinct perspective and actually a respected position in the "cop shop" as the local police station is referred to by many newspaper reporters. So I wouldn't allow myself to be discouraged from a journalism degree if that's what you want. Changing majors can mean loosing credits, time and money. Think it over.

You don't need to present any forms of identification when you submit any written piece of journalism....Mike Wallace of 60 Minuted fame has a criminal record...

If you feel any discomfort about being a convicted felon, make journalism a minor and choose another major. But, don't give up your dream of being a reporter or writer...

Try writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, not the NY Times, and write about a topic that's in line with the 'identity' of the newspaper, i.e., education, environment, etc.

I have written for many a newspaper and magazine and have never been asked whether or not I had any criminal record...try it.

Comment on any article in Playboy Magazine. Do it more than once, subscribe. And, watch subsequent issues of Playboy for your letter to the editor, reader response, etc....It's fun and so is the Magazine...And, besides, it's Playboy Magazine !

Good luck.
