I find that books, music, smells and even textures of things bring back all these memories. Why do we do this? My weirdest association with a memory is silk. Everytime i feel silk i remember falling asleep with a blanket bound in silk. Do you have any wierd connections with your sences and memories?

It's called classical conditioning whereby we associate a stimulus to a certain person or event.

EG, the smell of cigarettes reminds me of famiy parties when I was but a wee lass.

Well, if you think about it, the things you remember come from your experiences of the world, which you only get through your five senses. So if there's something special about a particular environment, it's going to stand out in your memory, and whatever special sensation made it stick there is going to trigger the memory again when you experience it again. The smell of cardamom brings me right back to Arab Street in Singapore, where I ate at this little open-air restaurant. I don't even consciously think, "Mmmm... cardamom... where did I smell that before? Oh yeah..." -- only later once I've already remembered it do I consider why that memory popped into my brain. The taste of dill pickles reminds me of a Christmas eve when I wanted a snack but there wasn't much in the fridge, so I ate three dill pickles and got rather queasy; wasn't all that interested in trying to see Santa that year. *grin*

I mainly associate things through smell: I change my perfume often, but a few times I'll go back to ones I enjoyed, even a few years later. One scent I hadn't worn in like ten years reminded of my happy times in high school, my school crush during summer. It was so powerful!
Our minds store a lot of memory, even if we don't acknowledge it until something brings it out to cognition.

Certain songs bring back memories, smells like lilacs, for me, bring back memories of my childhood; Flannel sheets and a blanket I've had since I was a child, are my most prized posessions...so yeah music, smell, texture, can bring back great memories...I couldn't agree more.

It's got something to do with the subconcious portion of your mind.
