reasoning with a conservative christian(s) in their lives on homosexuality issues?
it continues to look bleak for me, though i keep trying to get them to understand that it just isn't loving what they are doing and promoting. if you have been successful, how did you do it?

In high school I had this bible thumper trying to preach to me. A couple months ago I received and email from her saying she was a lesbian. Interesting how that often happens.

Even though I am heterosexual, I am always defending the LGBT's because I believe that God did NOT make a mistake when these people were Created. They do not do anything different than anyone else, we all have blood running through our veins, we all are created by the same Creator. I always tell them that if you would just have a conversation with these people you would find them loving, kind, and just wanting to be accepted by others for who they are. And by the way, who died and left them in charge of judging others? Isn't that a sin? (Only if you believe in the bible.) and I don't believe in it because it is written by men, who want to control by fear. I think it is going to be a shock to so many "Religious" people when they are standing in Heaven right next to the person that they thought was so bad. I love that thought.

In your additional comments, you've given us a hint as to why the conservatives can't be moved: They base their entire opinion on any topic on the Bible. The average one knows very little about psychology or child development or anything like that. Religious conservatives rarely use any other backup source -- other than the Bible or a book or tract written by a pastor who happens to agree with their stance. They don't see scientific research or writing of any value. Their world is very small and they would be lost without the social support of other conservatives like themselves. The are in a club, and they don't want to lose membership.

Curious1, I could say, "don't throw your pearls before swine", but the two-edged word of the Bible might cut me. Or I might be making bad karma for myself. No, I don't think there's hope for appealing to Christians of most of the sects (ha) that exist. You know what, tho, in the long run actions will always speak louder than words. That's where the argument lies, 'who's behaving like a good human'?

My darling Gwenneth and I moved in together after 3 years or so. Her family which had tolerated me as a friend became vile. They were of some fundamentalist sect. Dear Gwen could face them down when necessary as she knew all the arguments. Successful ?
We were at the same office. I was told to take my long leave.. I asked Gwen to take hers, but she said she was "Feeling tired"
We planned the trip and she asked for lots of lovely photos.
The trip was wonderful. I returned to learn that she had died from a virulent cancer.
I visited her grave laden with flowers and guilt. Her family had claimed her remains and had buried them in their "church's" private plot. A familly member was there and warned me I was not wanted. I pushed past to see the headstone which bore her date of birth and UNKNOWN TO GOD. I nearly had blood on my hands but the memory of Gwen serenely facing them helped me walk away
i suffered a major breakdown, but helped by my brother I gained treatment..Just recently, I asked him if we could change the wording on the stone. His reply was "The bastards have money and the church behind them. They will only degrade both of you further. He showed me a photo of a WW1 cemetary in France. Nearly all the readable stones bore "A Soldier of the Great War;
Known unto God".
Gwen was your soldier. gone before. Keep her in your heart and let God deal with the others.
No, were not successful but I can say with all my heart , those people will never win.
I pray that others will find their way to peace.
Love, Rose P.

You could ask them to explain why they take the words of the old testament (Leviticus) over the words of Jesus (love thy neighbor, do unto others, all loving God, etc). You could point out that giving more credence to one passage than another is judging the Bible and the word of God. You could also point out that God is the only judge. You could try lots of stuff. If they are close minded fundamentalists, I'd expect your success to be zippo. You can bring the horse to water, but blah, blah, blah.

Rarely, but I have with a couple. I just talked to them in a reasonable manor, trying not to insult their inteligence, as hard as that was.
I found calm reason and compassion works best. Granted they have a very hard time doing so for us, but if you show them HOW to be a "good christian" by example, they tend to come around.

Is it really worth the time and effort to convince someone who you really are, are you happy with who you are? That is really what counts, you being happy being who you are. Not trying to convince someone who has a different belief system. Live your life and don't worry about what others think. Peace.

Not with a conservative Christian, they are stupid beyond reason. My best friend is a straight republican biker though. He totally supports my rights, and I think I almost have him off the republican thing, though he won't admit it.

I hope someone has, because religious zealots are trained to believe EVERYTHING in the bible without question.
