Survival politics. We have created a system that requires our politicians to bring home the bacon to their constituents every two years so that they can be re-elected. And of course they need as much money as possible from PAC's, lobbyists, etc. in order to fund their re-election campaigns.

So our politicians are basically constantly working to keep themselves in office.

Until we get serious about campaign reform, we will never have a Congress that is worth a damn.

Partisan politics.

Most of the politicians on Congress, of both major parties, are far more concerned with keeping their jobs than doing their jobs. And most have given up any concept of acting in the best interests of their constituents.

So, what they aren't doing in the name of their own personal power trip, they're doing to score political points for their party, or against the opposition party.
