Go to school get a better education do charitable work. I remake toys and collect used toys I fix up to give to poor children and the spouse abuse center. Get an education for disabled children teach school for special children because many people cannot handle it and there is a need for such teachers in the US. Personally, I would start looking for another job. In my opinion, you should be making anywhere from $10-20 /hour, depending on the circumstances. If you are currently working with others that make much more, then I would approach your employer and ask for a pay raise. If this is not the case, then your only option is another job. Maybe you'll find a similar position and you'll still be able to do what you like.

Some jobs that are noble and self-rewarding are just not compensated as one would hope. Those are the types of jobs that take a special kind of person to perform. If money is your motivation, then yes it's time to look for another job. If you can not imagine yourself being any happy in a career other than where you are right now, regardless of the pay, then that is probably your sign that you are were you belong. Perhaps you can approach you employers with reasons why you deserve a pay increase.

I too work with kids and occassionaly special needs children as well...I made minimum wage my first year ($6.75 - CA). But I just finished my 3rd year where I was making $9.04/hour. In your 4th year you should be making a lot more than $6.90 (and I realize that California wages may be slightly inflated compared to elsewhere, but still...). I would ask for a raise, and if you don't get it I would recommend moving to a different job. It can be the same line of work, but you need more than $6.90/hour if you want to be able to live comfortably...

Since you are working with handicap kids, you are considered doing community services. So it's not about the pay. Treat it as you are helping those kids. Getting a higher pay means the centre will need more money to cover the overheads than to benefit the needy. If you are concerned about the pay, then you should not be working at such places but profit making organizations.

You should look for another way to make money, one that will allow you to keep working with handicapped kids but take home more money, too. You need more than $6.90/hour.

Politely ask for a raise because you need it to pay expenses. If you've been there for 4 years, I think they would value you as an employee and would be willing to give you a raise....unless you ask for a ridiculous amount.
