If it is enough just to be known by a great number of people, does this make people like Richard Ramirez, Osama bin Laden, and Hitler celebrities? What about DJ's (the ones that pick music to play on the radio, not the ones that spin)? The reason I'm asking this is that I constantly argue with my wife that people like Ryan Seacrest arent celebrities.

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines "celebrity" as - the state of being celebrated. John Mark Karr is infamous. That is being famous for something that is not popular among the people. You can be famous or infamous but not a celebrity. John Mark Karr would not sell out a stadium like the New York Yankees or "fill here with your favorite celebrity singer."

A celebrity is a person who is widely recognized (famous) in a society and commands a high degree of public and media attention.

Yes they are celebrities...a celebrity is not a job(actor or musician or athlete), that's the misconception people always mix them up with... if you are widely known, and a lotta people recognize you, then you are a celebrity, period... you can be either famous or infamous....

Politicians are celebrities....
Industry leaders of celebrities....
Spokesmen or Women or celebrities....

Celebrities just don't consist of actors, musicians, or athletes...
