A cartoon character designed for the under-12 demographic shouldn't be a topic of speculation in respect to 'his' sexuality.

Cartoons, in order that they be watched and loved by many kids - should be colourful, flamboyant and lively. These qualities don't have to equate to being 'gay'.

SPONGE REPRODUCTION
Sponges reproduce by both asexual and sexual means. Most poriferans that reproduce by sexual means are hermaphroditic and produce eggs and sperm at different times. Sperm are frequently "broadcast" into the water column. That is, sperm are created, concentrated and sent out the excurrent openings, sometimes in masses so dense that the sponges appear to be smoking. Sponges that reproduce asexually produce buds or, more often, gemmules, which are packets of several cells of various types inside a protective covering.

He's an animated character and is A-Sexual....he has no sex...he's not real, he's make believe. That's as bright as when Jerry Falwell said the purple tele-tubby was gay.....they are not real and don't have a sexual preference.
