James Watson and Francis Crick (1953) described (and built) the model for the double helix based on a theoretical idea. And Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin confirmed the shape using experimental data (x-ray diffraction), also 1953. (Same issue of Nature magazine, in fact.)

Watson and Crick have been given the most credit for inventing the DNA and model. Although they shared the Nobel with Maurice Wilkins and would have shared it with Rosalind Franklin but Franklin passed away before the 1962 award.

Rosalind Franklin found it by X-ray crystallography and she shared the pics with Watson and Crick, but they published first, so they got the credit.
