I am about to get a job updating and developing websites. I havent dont anything like this before but i was wondering if i needed Front Page. Or is it just easier? Is there a way to update a site from your own computer without Front Page?

FrontPage is definitely easier to learn. At least at the beginning. When you want to do something serious, you'll begin to wish you had something more powerful. For design work, Dreamweaver. For programming, Komodo.
Download and tinker with the Dreamweaver free trial from Adobe's site. You'll be glad you did. If you go the FrontPage route, try not to admit that you're using it in web design groups unless you're prepared to deal with a lot of snickering.
As to learning basic HTML and starting from scratch, which IS a more powerful and flexible way to get into things, I'd check out WebMonkey for tutorials. Then grab CuteFTP to do your file transfers. Though if you go the Dreamweaver route, you can STILL use it for HTML coding (though now you'll get cool things like syntax highlighting and code completion).

That depends. If, as you said, you haven't done anything like this before, then for the first time you could just use that frontpage. By the time you get more experienced, you'll try to use dreamweaver.
But you know what, you can still use notepad.
I usually don't use notepad when writing long pages, I need the highlight. But there is a good substitute: notepad++. Lightweight and use simple highlight.

It depends on a lot of things!
Microsoft Front Page is used (often on Windows) or the Adobe Dreamweaver (most often on Macs).
I personaly love Front Page!
If you have a simpler editor and know how to use HTML and other related things, I suppose you don't need FrontPage.. but you do need something!
If the website is put up by.. say.. Yahoo!.. Yahoo! has it's own file managor and web builder you can use. You can use that and/or the other.
You do need something that allows you to open the file and edit it. If you don't know this, I have no clue how you are getting hired!
sorry...

Nice you can get a job without any background...
FrontPage will allow you to develop nice-looking sites without having to learn HTML. Some site-hosts do not support all of the features that are included with FrontPage. A site developed with FrontPage may have to be uploaded with FTP, and may have limited functionality for people with different browsers, OSs, etc.
Short answer is "No, you do not need FrontPage."

Speaking as a programmer, if you do end up using Front Page, PLEASE regularize the HTML it produces before you send it off. It has this unfortunate tendency to run tag after tag after tag on a single line, to the point where it's hard to figure out where one structure begins and another ends.
In case it isn't obvious, I desperately hate Front Page. I'd rather you use Notepad.

Basic issue here is not Frontpage or Dreamweaver. Do you know HTML/XHTML/XML ?? if yes then you can do the editing even with notepad or wordpad also. All the mentioned tools & alike make it easier coz of graphic user interface.

Its essential to know at least one web design tool like Frontpage or Dreamweaver etc. It makes you life as a designer easier. There are ways of uploading a site without FrontPage, by using FTP applications. Its impossible to be a web designer without knowing a few related skills like scripting, uploading etc
