When my co-worker and I have a conversation, she always makes sure she is standing behind me instead of in front of me when I'm sitting in a chair at my computer. It seems like she is trying to hide herself from my view, and I don't understand why.

She's not heavy-set, but she's very skinny.

She's not making faces to other employees because she and I are the only ones in the room.

I don't want to ask her because it may make her emotionally uncomfortable.

I don't have an avatar because I'd rather spend time with questions and answers than design the features of a picture.

I am a woman and have absolutely zero interest in "checking her out" or in checking out any other women, for that matter!

Many people gave the predictable answer of her being insecure. But maybe she just wants to kind of stay on the "side line" so she doesn't feel like she's intruding or imposing on your time. Maybe she's bored and just wants to sit and visit with you while still allowing you to pay attention to your work. Maybe she's secure, but just not confident in how she should approach you as a colleague or possible friend.
Perhaps you could try turning around and looking her in the eye when you two are talking. Or just casually say something like "I can hear you so much better if you're facing me." If she's really just "hanging out" and you give her your full attention when she's there, I'll bet she cuts her visits short.

there can be a number of reasons why she does this...she might have an inferior complex or
had an embarrassing moment in her past and it stuck with her ever since...be patient with her ...turn around and make her face you....or just simply ignore her....it's your decision ,be the captain of your carbon unit ..

Shes doing exactly what you said, shes hiding. Maybe she feels intimidated. Or...she feels insecure about something...about herself. You should ask her.

Is she heavy-set? Maybe she feels intimidated, or embarassed because she is heavier than you are. Of course do not ask her, but that could be it.

Maybe she is self-conscious about her teeth or breath. Also, people who are shy have a problem with eye contact.

Ask her why does she do that. It is simple but saves a lot of brain strain.
