KITT - Knight Industries Two Thousand. Was the name of the car in the series. As for the year and type of actual car hard to say it was a compilation of different cars, but it was voiced by the guy who played Mr. Finney on "Boy Meets World", played Dustin Hoffman's dad in "The Graduate", and won a Tony award for playing Thomas Jefferson in the original production of the musical 1776 on Broadway and later the movie adaptation.

It's "KITT" and not "Chip."
KITT stands for the Knight Industries Two-Thousand. The car was a customized (awesomely-tweaked) (or pimped, as the expression is now) 1982 Trans-Am.

do you mean K.I.T.T? It was a Pontiac Trans-Am. Since the series started in September 1982, I would imagine it was either a 1982 or 1983 model.
