It's not a kid's show.
When this show was originally aired it was on Saturday mornings kind of late in the morning for the "big kids" who had slept in late. It was always meant to be a satire or a parody of the baby shows like Sesame Street and Romper Room or Capt. Kangaroo. It was pretty much ahead of it's time because some other shows on adult swim are much in the same voice. That is to say, where do you think many of the creators of adult swim shows got their inspiration in the first place? After all, many of them were in the age group for the target audience when Pee Wee's Playhouse originally aired!

If you watch the show, you'll start to see that there's a great deal of underlying adult humor... Very adult humor, at times.
There have been days when I've left Adult Swim on in the background while working on a web site and I would catch a very adult themed joke from Peewee's show that would easily fly over the head of most ten year olds, but left me sitting there in shock, wondering if I had actually heard what I thought I had heard.
It can be pretty amusing at times.

I think it's because of Pee Wee's dedication to the art of cartoon, with the "Penny" series of animation and the "King of Cartoons". When it got to regular TV in the early 80's in the 7 am Saturday time slot, it was aimed at two audiences- kids and adults who were out all night the previous Friday. Phil Hartman (RIP), Laurence Fishburne, and Natasha Leone all got their starts on that show.

My theory is that Cartoon Network wants to be more like Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite with their high ratings. People seem to like older shows and Pee Wee fits into the right demographic. Also if pee wee is accepted, then they can begin to introduce more live action.

Because Pee Wee was busted for having sex with himself in a adult movie theater so he was blackballed from kids tv.

This may sound moronic, but I think it has something to do with the legal trouble Paul Rubans got into years ago. I don't know this, but my gut instints are telling me thats why its on with the adult oriented shows on The Cartoon Network

I hate that show. I don't know why its on there. I love Adult Swim and that kind of ruins it a little for me.

Because he was caught masterbating in an adult theatre, was arrested and his life went downhill.
