Yeah my 3 month old son does the same thing. Gently close her eyes so they don't dry out.

THere is something pediatricians call active sleep and in newborns they can sometimes open their eyes and roll them in the back of their head. THey also can smile, cry and breath a little funny during these periods. I read of a study that pediatricians say that light sleep gives them more mental stimulation and exercise than deep sleep because it provides visual images. Watch her and it may seem like she is watching something interesting.

Actually it's quite common. My sister used to sleep with her eyes open all the time. If you're in doubt ask your doctor.

my daughter used to do that when she was a baby....she would fall asleep w/her eyes 1/2 open. Don't worry, it's totally natural. Although, mine is a teenager now, and when EXTREMELY tired, if she konks out from exhaustion, she sometimes does it still. It's totally fine.

My husband and I joke that when our baby does this she is watching us to make sure we don't lay her down. My step-mom has this problem, I don't know what causes it but she had to get eye drops because it would dry her eyes out.

Dunno why - but my child does that same thing - I SOMETIMES think she's awake. She is gonna be 3 y/o soon. I don't know if it's something they 'grow' out of...Yeah it can be 'scary' (more startling) - well at first. Now, we are use to it =)

Maybe it's because she is overtired and it takes energy to keep your lids shut?
