I used to ask my Introduction to Acting classes this same question. We'd chat about it for a bit, and then I'd assign them this homework:

Go out and rent your favorite film on DVD. Pop it in and start watching. At the absolute PEAK emotional moment in the film, stand up, strip off all your clothes, and dance around the room naked, screaming and yelling at the top of your lungs. NOTICE how the actors' performances are affected by your antics.

Obviously, they're not affected at all. And that's the difference between theatre and film. A film performance is like an insect trapped in amber. It will never change, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the people who are viewing it at any given time.

A theatrical performance is a living organism that changes from night to night. It is different every time you see it, and it has everything to do with the exchange of energy between actors and audience. If you tried the "naked dancing" experiment during a live performance...I guarantee you that something will happen. You might have to have a friend come and bail you out afterwards...but SOMETHING will happen.

Very Interesting question...there is something called a Movie Theater, where people can watch movies within it, but if you are asking in a different way...A theater is where music like the orchestra play or the choir sing, plays made by sponsored people like the school plays, and its basically a place for entertainment from a live performance...for a movie is made from captured moments from a video camera, special effects, to make the act a lot more dramatic, intense, and interesting for the viewers on a television screen...

Theatre (as in plays, musicals, and other acting done live on stage) = long, drawn out show with no beverages or snacks allowed; usually not exciting. Typically has exaggerated/flamboyant and irritating acting and singing. Boring....

Movies (as in cinema) = reasonably sized show (rarely over 2 hours) with beverages and snacks allowed. Often cheaper than plays. Usually far more entertaining than live plays and musicals.

In the movies they see a film that has been recorded.

theater is a performance on the stage in front of many people and the actors have their lines and songs memorized and there's no lip-syncing. I personally think theater is lots more fun!

well, besides the fact that most movie actors are pretty faces and crappy actors, one is live, the other is a recording (meaning they get second chances to make it right)
