Why use the term "noob"? I happen to like the art style. Sure, the avatars are simple, but at least they get the job done.
I'm not sure what you mean by "yahoo's myspace pictures", since MySpace shares very little in common with Yahoo!.

I'm usure as to why you believe someone qualifys as a 'noob' if they like the avatars provided by the site.
Personally, I have no talent when making my own avatars, and I'd rather not be a grey box.

Avatars are just-for-fun. They also give you a sense of being special ( you being the owner of this unique avatar)and identity.

My self esteem is so fragile I have to ask people to rate my taste in picking out a cartoon character that somehow I think looks like me.
