What is wrong with markets, when it comes to the provision of education?

And why is education mostly provided by the government?

If education were left up to the marketplace, only the children whose families could afford education would go to school. This is why public schools don't charge education fees/tuition to attendees. What would happen to those kids who didn't go to school?
