I now have housemates, and I want to create a new desktop for my computer. If it helps, my O.S. is Windows 98.

What I want to do is create a new, "empty" desktop, so that only I can log on to my "current" setup. If anyone else uses my computer, they will only get a "plain" Desktop and none of my folders, favorites, etc.

There must be a way to do this, without having to re-write all of my current setup.

Ideas?

You can go to Windows 98 Control panel and create a new user account from their. But you have to know that Win 98 user accounts are not much sophisticated like Win XP or Win 2xxx. And also, when the login dialog box appears and if the user press cancel button, he’ll be automatically login as Administrator!!

I really dont understand ur question but wat it sounds like is that u want to give ur roommates their own account. So if u have 98, i recommend u upgrade to XP. To upgrade to XP, back up all ur programs and files. Formate the hard drive. Doin this erease all data on the hard drive including Win. 98 OS files. Turn on ur PC and insert the XP cd. when installing XP, it allows u to create five accounts from the beginnin. Create them. Dont assign a password just yet. after Xp is up and running, log in to each account, and delete any shortcuts to programs u dont want them to use. Keep the desktop like it is (the desktop should only show the recycle bin icon). allow them to add icons as they go.
Back to UR account. go to "My Computer" > Right click the hard drive icon > Choose properties > go to quota and give each user the amount of hard drive space they can use. That way one user can take up all the hard drive on the computer. NEVER give them, an administrator account cause they could cause they computer to malfunction.

If u dont want to spend money upgrading to XP go to Control Panel, choose User Account and give them an account. Dont give them a password yet. log in to their accounts and delete the program shortcuts u dont want them to have access to. Its much better and secure if u upgrade to XP though. Charge them $25 or more for the computer so u can pay the upgrade to XP. Charge them ONLY ONCE or they might not want to use it.
