Sometimes I act like I am fine when I'm not because I don't want to be the girl to bring everyone else's mood down. Even when someone tells me that they want to help out or they want to know what's wrong, it seems like if I really open up to them, things change and then noone wants to be around me because they don't want me to be a "party pooper" if they happen to have a good day.
Personally, I think people that consider someone to be a "party pooper" is very selfish and maybe if they offered a little advice to the person then the person wouldn't be as depressed and everyone could be a little happier. I mean, if I know someone is upset, I am going to drag it out of them because I know they really do want to open up, it's just difficult, not knowing what someone will think of the situation, or maybe everyone expects the bubbly person to never get depressed once in a while. I guess I know how I would be understanding to others so it is difficult for me to comprehend others being selfish for their own mood as opposed to being understanding.
So that's why I just give up on others and laugh instead of cry.

That is because they are trying very hard to remain positive and it is also to hide their pain and sorrow. LAUGH; and everyone will laugh with you!... but cry... and you will cry alone!.. I suppose it is a way of survival. But to some sensitive people, they see right through the fake laugh the tears that are just about to come out!

Maybe, a fake laugh, beats no laugh at all! They fake laugh, and the next thing you know, they might really laugh. Laughing is the best medicine.

Because admitting that they are depressed is admitting weakness. As humans, we want everyone else to think that we are in control, even when we're not. They're probably embarrassed.

I think it's twofold: First, we do it because we are socially conditioned to respond to others in a positive manner. Second, we do it because it makes us feel somewhat in control to appear happy on the outside. I know all this, because I'm going through a divorce, and at least those are my reasons :-) Hope that helps.

They're doing it for your sake. Giving you a laugh what they think you want.

because depression isn't easy to talk to about. it's a lot easier to just hide it all inside, than have to open up to someone and talk about it.

It's a process of denial, like the alcoholic that says he actually can control his liquor.
