"Gosh Minkus, it could be ignorance or it could be stupidity.
Many great artists, like those who work in stone, have said their creations were already in the stone. Their job was to break stone away until they have uncovered the masterpiece.
The primary reason for the statement is probably ignorance; however, we probably shouldn't discount the statement because there may be truth in it. After all, the artist projected his/her idea upon the stone or canvas because it was the ultimate idea they could achieve at the relevant time."

People either get it, or they don't. When I was in art school, there was a lot of bad art that was created, because students (myself included) couldn't think of anything better before the deadline, and therefore get a failing grade. I guess that would fall under the category of "art under pressure", or "do or die" artwork.
Kind of off subject, but one of my favorite websites is www.museumofbadart.org. Its one of the funniest sites I've ever seen... Check it out if you want a laugh at people who take themselves too seriously.

Because they themselves may have made a piece of art a certain way because they couldn't think of anything else to make. I have.

Because some "art" really sucks.
I went to the Yoko Ono exhibit, and one of the "pieces" was several piles of rocks in a white room.
Nothing else, just piles of rocks.
They weren't even shaped like anything, just piles of rocks.
Is that art?

Peopel sometimes just don't appreciate certain styles of art. I am an art enthusiast, and while there are certain styles that I like less than others, I think you still need to have an appreciation for the artist's attempt at expression.

Envy. When it is at a personal level, the hidden (unspoken) statement there is "Why didn't I think of that first?"

Ignorance. It's amazing how some people have no idea of how stupid they sound when they make statements like that.

Maybe they thought the artwork lacked character, maybe they didn't understand what the artist was trying to express.

Which is true, mostly, haha!
Seriously, who're we to judge? I mean art is all subjective anyway.
"Another man's meat is another's poison" so goes the adage.
