I have a full length shower without a tub, the current base is plastic crap. I read a website that said I had to lay all this crazy stuff down and layers of junk before I can tile. I watch DIY and all they do is pour concrete. Which is right?

Hi,
More than anything you have to have a FIRM and LEVEL foundation before installing your base. You will probably only find this out after you rip out the existing base and determine its condition. I often have found that the plumbing infrastructure (pipes, etc.) needed replacement as well.

Installing a shower base/stall is not a simple operation and can take considerable time depending on the condition of the existing flooring.

Likewise don't expect to do this for pocket change....it can be very pricey depending on your materials.

Ok, maybe I am an optimist, but I think putting in shower doors is much harder (nerve wracking) than setting the shower pan. You didn't mention why it's crap, so I am going to assume it leaks. Take out the drain, usually they screw in (righty tighty, lefty loosey. A pair of channel locks slipped down into the holes will let you screw it out. You will have to remove the suround (walls). Usually you have to discard and buy a new pan and suround. You might be able to reuse the doors. If leaking or appearance is the problem. Why not clean the pan, repair any cracks with reinforced Bondo (yes car body repair Bondo), and paint it with a latex type swimming pool paint? Drylox water stop is one I use. Lowes sells it.
