To put it simply, the English speak English-English(French/Latin influence).Americans speak American-English(German influence). For example:
AMERICAN ENGLISH
armor armour
gray grey
defense defence
The language in England is derived from both French(Latin) and German (Saxon). This is where we get the term Anglo-Saxon.
The US was founded by English settlers.Later on German settlers arrived in New England.Their influence was such that many of our documents, including the Constitution have Germanic letters within the English words. The word Constitution has the Germanic long F instead of the letter s (pronounced s).In fact, this country was one vote away from having German as its language.
