has anyone ever heard of the baby coming in contact with the needle during the procedure?

It is rare but possible, but usually it is done after checking the position of the baby with an ultrasound so the needle does not come in contact with the baby.

I've never heard of that happening. The technology that they have in the obstetric field is amazing, with 4D ultrasounds, etc. they know exactly what is going on with the baby.
