It's a sentimental thing with most people. The USA has a love for Trains that goes back a long way.

Your question is a little vague - I am guessing that you are taking issue with the constant press adoration with the use of trains as people movers in Europe, where, of course people are much smarter and have more money. How am I doing so far?
In my opinion, there is no benifit in the restrictiveness of trains; there is benifit in not having to park your car downtown New York. There is benifit in being able to live near the city and to take the train from an area you can afford to live. It is beneficial to use trains in some cases because you can avoid the ownership of an auto all together. But, since we have choices, at least yet today, you don't have to use the train, if you really don't like them.
