Its been 2 years since I have had a friend apart from my sister in law or hubby. I'm a stay at home mom of a 17 month old and I am pretty busy but I would like to make some friends who have kids my sons age. I'm really shy and I'm nervous about going out to meet new people because its been so long. My husband tries to get me to be friends with his friends wives but none of them have kids and they still drink and stuff. I'm scared to meet new people because I don't know what I would talk about apart from my son. I don't go out all that much. I'd really like to go out sometimes and do stuff with a friend my own age who has kids. Any suggestions?

I know it's tough finding new friends when your are not in school anymore- . I went through the same thing.
Try getting involved in activites through a community college class- crafts, cooking, book club, church, library...
I know this sounds like trite advice, but really, I would think there are friendly people in those places.
Read the newspaper, talk about hobbies, travel- anything you know a little about will give you plenty of conversation starters.

Are you a church goer? If so I can tell you that would be a wonderful place to meet people your age and chances are there will be children there of all ages. I don't know what causes you to lack confidence in yourself, but I know that with God's help you can overcome it. I read where you don't have anything in common with your husbands friends that drink, that is good. It sounds to me like you have a good head on your shoulders. The wonderful thing about meeting friends in church is that you will always have something to talk about!! I will be praying for you, and I hope that you will pray too, that God will give you the direction that you need. May God bless you.
