For a small engine like that I'd look for a decent used engine and replace the cracked block.
No guarantees either way.

I have used both JB weld and another product that I cannot remember at this time however call a couple of machine shops and auto part stores around your hometown and ask them if they have a product that comes in a tube that you mix together with your hands that is used to repair cracks on engines. When this product is mixed together you will apply it on a very clean engine surface that has also been slight scuffed up with some type of die grinder or sander. I understand that you might think that this is crazy but I have had success with it and it might work for you.

If the mechanic mentioned sleeving, then you have a scored cylinder. If your block is cracked, the mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about. A cracked block can be brazed and I have heard people say they hold up if the crack is very small. I wouldn't waste my time with it. You can go to the junkyard and get another motor or even just a block if you wish. Good luck.

First where is the crack? If sleeving was mentioned I assume that it is in the cylinder.
If so that means that the block must be torn down and sent to a machine shop to be bored out so that a sleeve can be pressed into the damaged cylinder.
I guess if it were mine I would look to a auto recycling yard to buy a different engine or block.

I've done it with J-B weld on the block of a boat engine that someone left water in over the winter and it froze. the crack was bad but after the J-B weld cured(about a day) we cranked the boat right up and haven't had a problem with it since. we learned that J-B weld is actually as strong as they say it is and to never lend your boat to anyone who doesn't know to drain the water out of it when they are done playing with it.

if your mechanic says that he can fix a cracked block, you are better off getting a new or used engine, it's going to cost ALOT more in the long run to have it "fixed".
