i have an eight year old car that has gone through some normal wear and a couple accidents. while approaching a light i had to break firmly when the light changed. i did not slam the brakes. the car came to a complete halt then died. i was able to restart easily. i even drove a while longer to see if the problem happened again, but i had no further issues. i have a rebuilt transmission after a rear-end collision (i was hit from behind). could this be the culprit?

It is POSSIBLE that the transmission was the cause, but not PROBABLE.
When you are driving at a cruise load level, and over 35 mph, the car's PCM (Powertrain Control Module) tells the transmission to lock up the torque converter. As the transmission has been replaced/repaired, it is conceivable that the transmission did not execute the command to release the lock-up, in which case the transmission is engaged to the engine without fluid coupling. This has the effect of stopping without the clutch released and stalling the engine.
More than likely though, this sudden stop (not a panic stop, just aggressive) may well have had the effect of stalling the airflow through the MAF (mass airflow sensor).
This has the same effect on your engine as YOU having your wind knocked out as a result of a fall or collision with a brick wall.
After the engine stopped, the computer saw everything as a fresh restart when you cranked it over. This will happen to a car when it has a few miles on it. It is usually not serious enough to address until it becomes a regular thing or begins to leave you high and dry in traffic.
Good Luck

Could be many things but start with the basics, if yourcar has been a little sluggish and the stopping at the light, it may be dirty fuel injectors, in this case pick u some STP Fuel Injector Cleaner and put in the gas tank, full bottle for maybe the next two fill ups.

are the basics being performed, if you do alot of in town driving when was last time spark plugs were changed, air filter, fuel filter.

I have known about overdrive problems, causing vehicles not to start.

If you keep up on all these thing, anddon't have a service engine soon light on.with out taking it in and having it tested its hard to say.

through fact your automobile is controlled with the help of desktops it does want a real mechanic or you could bypass into an automobile factors save w/knowledgable human beings. On my previous automobile I had problems with the throttle positioning sensor and the o2 sensor. the two led to my mechanic chum to bypass contained in the direction of the trench at 80 whilst he became attempting to end. He got here back finding like he crapped himself and there have been flowers hangin off my automobile. i think of its the throttle positioning sensor for my section through fact I had the comparable issues and you may desire to get somebody interior the understand to do it for you reason i attempted doing it myself out of frusteration of taking so long for them to get to it that I placed it on on the incorrect attitude and formally killed it. it fairly is now with regard to the dimensions of a lunchbox, yet my ex permit me run into it along with his truck in the previous letting it bypass to get out some pent up anger in the direction of the motor vehicle. Then he bought me a clean one for mothers day.
