A good vocabulary is one thing but you have to be strategic. You have to know when to save vowels for small words and maximize those double and triple words. A good player will also find ways to use the Q and X which can score you big points. Yet, you want to get rid of these fast because they are hard to use. In contrast, some people expend their letters too fast and don't look at the big picture. You have to look ahead a few words to get the edge. Good luck!

Get an official Scrabble dictionary. Learn all the two letter words. They have added a few over the years, so get the most recent dictionary.
Always try to create words in both directions at the same time if possible and try to land your 'big' letters on blue squares. One 'x' tile played on a triple, making a two letter word in each direction, will give you 50 points. The 'x' tile is a good one because it can be used with most vowels to make a two letter word. Ax, ex, xi, ox and xu.
Another hint: Try not to set your opponent up. Be careful not to play so that your opponent can easily score on the triple word score or in other high scoring areas. And if you can't take advantage of a high score area, try to 'ruin' it for your opponent. It may seem kind of dirty, but there's no rule against it, and it could end up giving you a victory.

You win if you end up with more points than your opponent/s at the end of the game .
How to get lots of points for each word you play ? Strategically place the high power tiles (like Z & Q, each 10 pts, X & J, each 8 pts and K worth 5 pts each; even W and Y worth 4 pts each) in words where they land on the colored squares. Covering the red square gets the most pts and the dark blue next best.
In other words, long and fancy words don't always cut it. You could play FLAVOR and get just 13 or 14 pts if not placed right.
But, even very short words can get you 52+ pts if placed right. For example, just playing AX or JO with the X or the J falling on the dark blue and forming words both ways, can get you 52 pts !
Also, making 7-letter words (using all yr 7 tiles in one shot, called a Bingo) gets you a bonus of 50 pts in addition to the pts you get for the word.
Learn the list of 2-letter words and 3-letter words and you'll increase your score considerably.
Remember that the 2 blanks are very valuable (like jokers or wild cards in a card game) and try not to use a blank unless you are going to score 50 pts or more. A blank on your rack will likely get you a bingo. The four S's are the next valuable and should not be used for less than 30 pts.
It's a great game, no two are ever the same. The more you play, the more you will learn the strategy, so enjoy !
