Description
Threading is a centuries-old technique of hair removal practiced in India, and rapidly growing in popularity across the United States. The beautician removes individual or rows of unwanted hair by using string or “thread”, and pulling out the hairs by the follicle.
Does threading hurt?
The sensation usually takes 1-2 times to get used to, but customers say it hurts less than waxing. Many customers say it doesn’t hurt at all.
Why is threading better than waxing, tweezing, and razors?
Waxing tends to burn, peel, and irritate the skin, especially the skin around the eyes. In addition, repeated waxing increases the chances of wrinkles, especially around the sensitive eye area. Tweezing and razors increase the chances of in-grown hairs and cutting the skin. Waxing, tweezing, and razors all make facial hair grow back thicker and faster. Threading is more precise and the hair grows back thinner and slower; there is also no burning, peeling, or irritation, and is good for getting rid of in-grown hairs.
How often do I have to do threading?
It varies from person to person but for eyebrows, usually every 2-3 weeks

Nat the Brat's answer is very thorough. I've had threading done for a few years now. It hurts like the dickens, but it has numerous benefits ...
1) It is safe to do if you're using any medical products on your face. For example, you should never wax if on Retin-A; the skin can be ripped off. Threading grabs the hairs without grabbing the skin. Hence, it plays well with others.
2) It leaves much less redness and irritation than waxing. You can thread and go ... You look good immediately after the procedure.
3) It is less likely to cause premature wrinkling and skin-stretching than waxing (see others' answers as re: waxing's tendency to pull at skin).
I know that threading sounds weird and different ... But it's actually been around for a very, very long time in Asian countries. In NYC, for example, there are two large, high-end salons dedicated to threading (www.shobhathreading.com). Many of the professional aestheticians who work at Shobha are Indian. (I don't work there ... so I'm not trying to build their business. I think, however, that there might be more info about the procedure on their website.)
The bottom line: Threading is a very safe, very hygienic way of removing hair. Just be prepared to say ouch a few times. For me, it's totally worth it.

It's when a person uses actual thread and weaves it through the hairs on your eyebrows. It actually hurts less than waxing and is much quicker. The thread is able to catch more hair than the wax and tweezers would with a lot less pain and a lot less irritation.

i think that getting your eyebrows threaded hurts a little more then getting them waxed, just because when you get them waxed, the pain is all at once...where as threading is a longer process, but i think more worth it. you get a much cleaner line i think with threading. but its pretty weird how they do it. you should check it out...I'm sure you'll like it..and the price is about the same

It's a practice of using 2 threads spun together to pull the hairs out. It is actually less painful than waxing and doesn't pull the skin so it causes less wrinkles over time. It is also generally less expensive and you have a nicer shaped brow than with waxing

I have heard of it and I watched someone get their eyebrows threaded on tv. It seemed as if it didn't hurt too much, because the person wasn't complaining. Personally I would just get mine waxed because it would just seem easier and quicker to me.

I've heard of it. Special thread is used to pluck your eyebrow hairs & shape them how you want. I've never had it done so I'm unsure of how long it'd take. Call around to some hair and/or nail salons to ask if they do that procedure.
