The right-slant mark (á, é, í, ó, ú) is an accent mark. The little squiggly line (ã, ñ, õ) is a tilde. In Spanish, the umlaut is used in the Spanish letter combinations of "güe" (like cigüeña) and "güi" (like güiro). And finally, you will also need inverted punctuation (¿, ¡).

To answer your question, there are a few ways to type accented and special characters, assuming you're using Windows:

(1) Character Map (charmap) - Found under "Accessories, System Tools". Allows you to chose the characters you want, copy them to the clipboard, then paste them into the area that you're typing text.

(2) Alt Codes - To insert a character, you hold down the "Alt" key while typing a designated number on the numpad on the right side of the keyboard. (If you have a laptop, it may not work correctly.) Macintosh computers work similarly, using the "Option" key. For a list of the important Alt/Option codes, visit:

(3) If you're typing in a Microsoft Office 2003 (or later) application, such as Word, there are special key commands that can be used. They work like this:

(4) Finally, if you have a previous version of Microsoft Office, or in some other applications, you can select "Insert, Symbol" and select the character from a list (much like charmap).

If you are using Microsoft Office, click on INSERT - SYMBOL and click on the character, then click on INSERT. In some, like Ñ and ñ (those squiggly lines are superimposed tildes), hold down ALT then at the numeric pad (not the numbers on the rows atop of the letters), tap the following

165 for Ñ
164 for ñ

Release the ALT key and the uppercase and lower case "enye" will be included in what you type.

Start by making sure your numbers lock is on. You will also have to use the numeric key pad to enter the numbers because you are directly entering ASCII codes. For each letter you want to write, you have to do the following: HOLD DOWN the "Alt" key and type in the 3 number code then release the "Alt" key and the letter will appear.

Here's the short list:
é 130
ó 162
ñ 164
Ñ 165
º 167
¿ 168
¡ 173

I don't know where it is on Windows XP, but on Windows 2000 you can go into Accessories, then System Tools and select Character Map to see all the available letters for a certain font. You can then either copy and paste it or use the keystrokes it lists. For example, to type ñ, I have to hold down the ALT key and hit 0241. Hopefully there's an easier way on XP, but look for the Character Map program.

i don't know how to type the actual letter with the symbols over it but if you go to insert and then symbols, there are some options there you could play around with.

Hopes that helps some, if not, try using the help bar, enter something like symbols, spanish symbols, accent marks- shortcuts and so on. Sometimes, it will send you online where you can get information and printouts

You need to hit a special combination of keys in Microsoft word, go to insert > symbols, or copy and paste it from a website.

dont know which one you are looking for but if you hold "alt" and type in a number combination you'll find one. ô = (alt + 147) ù= (alt+151) you get the point.
