Total knee replacements are done on daily bases. There are 4 parts to the knee prosthesis,The femur, the tibia, the tibial bearing and the patella.
These prosthesis are very good and last around 12 to 20 years. But with the contact in football the prosthesis would be dislocated. Most people with these can function in their daily activities with out much discomfort.

They do knee transplants, as well as have artificial knees. The problem is that the knee is never as strong as it once was, and in the cases of transplants, the risk of rejection is great, so if you end up injuring yourself again, it is risky to get another knee transplant.

Knee transplants won't hold up to contact sports like football. athletes in other sports can still participate after knee transplants.

transplants arent the kinda thing where they just pop the new one in and your good to go ... theres alot of drug therepy to supress your body from attacking the new organ, as well as drugs to facilitate the healing (like anti coagulants and steriods)
so anyway they couldnt play again because of the drugs they would have to be on for life ( there is a certain amount of controversy btw about wether face transplants are ethical for these reasons)
if you were asking about the replacements, they dont twist well.. making the kind of spinning moves they would have to do to still be competetive in play impossible.

They can do knee replacement, but the materials with which replacement knees are made is not durable enough to withstand that kind of physical activity. Plus, knee replacements don't last forever.

because they're not transplants, they're replacements, and they don't always fix the problem.
