As someone else said, it's totally more about the grammar than the spelling, really.
Although, I do get tired of seeing "u" and "r" replacing "you" and "are," as well as a plethora of other abbreviated words.
No, you don't have to be a spelling and grammar genius, but come on! Laziness is just an excuse, not a good reason. Do you do everything else with as much laziness? If so, good luck with life.
Also, it's not so much people that answer the questions as it is people that ASK them. I skip over a lot of questions that are hard to read because of poor grammar and horrible spelling. Just make it readable!

Bothers me a lot. Sometimes I won't answer a question that I'm interested in answering simply because the person couldn't even word it with correct grammar or spelling.
I try to justify it with the fact that we do have a lot of younger people on here who just haven't made it through all their English classes yet, but then I think to myself, No...I wasn't like this at a young age.
So when I do happen to find questions and answers that are written well, I enjoy it and try to forget that nowadays most people just don't care enough or they're just really that dumb.

I fully agree. But as someone else pointed out, we're dealing with a bunch of illiterate goobers here, who either can't spell or don't care one way or another.
But the goobers don't seem to comprehend the simple fact that most educated people feel poor spelling equals a low IQ. I, for one, take poor spellers far less seriously than I do accurate spellers.

Well, we all make mistakes but some are just so outlandish that I wonder if they were written by someone who has been skipping English class and spending their time on YA.
I'm thinking that there needs to be a grammar check as well as a spelling check.

I've been a professional proofreader... Hell, yes, it annoys and frustrates me that so many people either cannot or will not spell things correctly. Some of my personal pet peeves are than vs. then, affect vs. effect, and of course, the whole there/they're/their thing... Arrrghh!

Not only that, they can't ask a question properly. i.e. "Horses as Animals?" is a new question...WTF? I don't want to jump in and say,"uh..yes?..thanks for the two points!" I like to actually try to be some help! But I can't if I have no idea what they're asking!!
If they don't speak English, I understand. But still some folks don't even TRY.
I'm also tired of the cyber-beggars...Help,help send me $.gimme a break.
Lastly (aren't you glad you asked?..lol) the people who use "i" as in "I".."i need to kno how i do dat" ARRRRRRGH!

Yes it's bad. Yes it's hard on the eyes. But the worst part is, is that the internet is a free thing. If people want to spell atrociously we can't punish them for that. When people typ lik dis OR LIKE THIS, I just ignore them.

Spell check AND proof-read. That's my motto. But that's only because in my opinion the English language is very beautiful and I have a lot of respect for its nuances. (Well, okay, that last one was a French word.)

it has been a general philosophy for the last 30 years that punctuation marks, capitalization, etc is not used on computer communications such as email, and other messages. That philosophy is being carried through on this forum. spelling words correctly would be nice, but puncuation marks and capitalization are not nessessary with computer communications. its up to the descrection of the writer whether or not to use punctuation. even though not using any is acceptable.

No, mom, you are not alone. I enjoy getting email from the people here, but sometimes it gives me a headache trying to decipher the poor spelling and grammar. It's bad enough to show your ignorance in email. Why do it publicly as well?
