It is most likely a hematoma, i.e. a small pool of blood due to broken capillary vessels. Hematomas in tissues can cause swelling and pain. It will generally resolve as ecchymosis (or black & blue bruise). But if the pain is persistent or worsens and you have difficulty moving, you should go to your physician and make sure there is not an underlying fracture there, depending on how it was struck.

The red lump is a blood blister. That may need to be drained. Put your finger on ice. You may have a broken finger too. Ice will help with the swelling, Tylenol, Motrin or aspirin will help with the pain. After 24 hours on ice you can start switching between cold & warm packs for your finger. If it gets worse or the pain gets unbearable go see your doctor.

Basic First Aid~~R.I.C.E: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. You probably have a blood blister on top of a badly bruised or possible broken finger. If it happened at work, file a Worker's Comp claim in the morning and go to the doctor. If not, you might still consider going to the doctor, but if you try not to use it much, ice it for 20min every hour, tape your fingers together before work tmrw, and keep it elevated above the level of your heart as often as possible to reduce swelling.

Well, it's simply what it is - a swollen and painful finger with a red lump at the bottom. What is this? My suggestion is to see your doctor.

You need to see a Dr. and probably he will give you a tetnus shot if you haven't had one in 10yrs.

I think you have an infection going on if this is red . Don't wait until it might spread to your blood stream, not to scare you.

Good luck!

Might be broken but it does sound infected. It doesn't matter what anyone says here, see a doctor.
