"M People is said to stand for Mike's People. Even though Heather Small is the front figure with her beautiful voice, Mike seems to be the central person in the group."
I always thought it stood for Manchester, i.e. from whence they came. You learn something new every day!

So it is said. I think it is more likely to stand for Manchester which is where the band came from and MUCH more likely the rest of the band would go along with the name if that were the really case.
