I'm in Palm Beach County (PBC). I've never been to Naples but I did visit Sanibel Island, which is over in the direction of Naples, when I first came to Florida. While the trip was very relaxing, it did seem like we were the only blacks on the island. The people we did encounter at the hotel, restaurants, and other locations on the island seems to be uncomfortable around us, as I noted that they we a lot friendlier to others. It is like that in PBC. It’s like there is an unspoken agreement that blacks are not supposed to be in certain places.
Having lived in Florida for only 3 years, this is much different that what I was used to in the Northeast. Here it is not only the whites who act as if they haven’t seen a professional black but it’s the black also who are surprised that I have my own office. As a whole, black really aren’t doing too well in Florida. Many of the nicer areas have very few blacks while the rundown locations contain many African Americans, Haitian, Hispanics, and other immigrants.
I hear that Naples is nice. I never visited because I figured that like PBC, there aren’t many activities for blacks.

Naples is the domain of rich, blue-blood types. It's not necessarily about color as much as the car you drive and how much $ you have in your wallet.
I don't like Naples. I don't like the people, I don't like the town, and I sure as hell don't like the building department in Collier County. I don't even buy a soda until I cross north into Lee County.

I find that for me being middle class and white sucks just as much with all the rich old timers here in Sarasota. Its even worse here if you are African American..... Of course, I can't imagine what that must be like, but I sympathize with you. I think from Sarasota south, its split between really old rich people or people who aren't regardless of race. Unfortunately sometimes people don't have anything better to do than be stupid. Hope my thoughts help in someway and hang in there :-)

Maybe you should move. I live in Charlotte NC and I'm thinking about moving myself. Have you ever been to the pacific northwest
(Portland or Seattle). I just worked for a few months in Roanoke Va and it was OK and affordable but I just can't stand the South myself. They have such hang-ups in these parts.

i'm sorry, that must feel really weird. i live much farther north, in st. augustine, and i can count maybe 2 days this summer i saw anyone black on the beach. it's really odd. i don't see any overt racism, just a lack of any diversity. i think alot of florida is like that.
