My mother had a unique system. She always told me to toss out seed in this ratio:
One for the birds:
One for nature:
One for the garden/lawn.
In other words, throw out 3 times the seed you need, and you will be happy with the result and not harm anything. It has always worked for me, and my flower beds and lawn have always been lush. A small price to pay to be environmentally friendly.

If you put burlap over the seed you accomplish two things... It keeps the moisture in and the birds can't get to the seed.

Instead of straw, put top soil over the seed, just a thin layer, even better is the moisture control top soil you by in the bags from menards.

Slingshot or BB gun. But seriously, someone makes recordings of birds in distress that you can buy to repel the birds temporarily. My local farmers market uses it for their outdoor produce and the birds wont come near. You could also hang some old cds or shiny pie pans on stakes here and there in the yard, that repels them too.Or borrow the neighbors cat for a couple of weeks.

Over a small area, plastic netting works well. with straw or hay they can scratch about amongst it. fine mesh netting puts them off.
Maisy,
That reminds me of an old English farming saying about planting seed corn.
One for the rook,
One for the crow,
One to die,
One to grow.

If you can find burlap, use it for cover until you get a good start. Hay is supposed to work but I have had poor luck with it. Good luck!

Bits of tinsel on little poles here and there tends to scare them away... as will a blow up snake, or a fake owl.
