Lets go back a little ways...how about Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Ann Wilson of Heart, Patty Smyth of Scandal, and Janis Joplin when she fronted Big Brother and the Holding Company...and those are just the first four that come to mind.
Every decade has seen it's fair share of great bands with female leads...just because they're very much a minority in rock, it SURE doesn't mean they stink!
And if they do, the scent suits me...just fine.

There are so many bands with Female singers- even in addition to Paramore and Amone. The Dresden Dolls, The Hush Sound, Tegan and Sara, The Veronicas, New Years Day, Superchick, Children 18:3, Rainer Maria, and SO many more.
Actually, I think that girl singers add character and make bands better.

Not true at all. Dipping into the past, we find Linda Ronstadt with the Stone Ponys, Grace Slick with Jefferson Airplane(She's awesome), Janis Joplin was with Big Brother and the Holding Company briefly. Ann and Nancy Wilson were the core of Heart. Also, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie with Fleetwood Mac, Annie Lennox with The Eurythmics, Debbie Harry with Blondie, Belinda Carlisle with The Go Gos, etc

I haven't really heard a great band with a female singer. I know of a few good songs with female singers but no good bands. Evanesence is alright but their format is already old and tiring.
I'm not sure why many successful female vocalist are solo. I guess not many girls wish to be the singers of bands but rather their own solo artist.
Perhaps the best band with a female vocalist is The Cranberries or maybe Blondie.

I'm not sure if this question only applies to today's bands, but no girl singer was ever hotter than Stevie Nicks, voice and looks and Fleetwood Mac was a major ***-kickin' band! One of the all-time greats!

Thats a matter of opinion. Whoever told you that doesn't have a very open mind. I like lots of bands with girl singers.

nightwish and lacuna coil are ok, but most of the time female lead singers of a band dont work. oh and flyleaf is decent

hellz no! there are many bands that i like that have female singers for ex: joan jett and the blackhearts, hole, the donnas, blondie, the cranberries, bikini kill, babes in toyland, kittie , lacuna coil, walls of jericho and flyleaf.
