....yeah thats because nobody wants to come here because everyone is so freaking racist. I get so sick of this. During history class we were watching a video about Emmit Till (sorry if I misspelled his name, if I did please correct me) and some kids were actually laughing. Is there anybody else that has to deal with ignorant people like this and if you do how do you do it?

Yes, they are real racist. We still have a KKK that likes to march every now and then. At school nooses are found in the few black kids lockers and they get "jumped" alot. Things are still happening whether people like to believe it or not because people tend to want to turn a blind eye

The racial makeup of the city was 98.35% White, 0.08% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.79% of the population.

No matter where you go, you are always going to run into people like this. Just as long as you know you are the better person for not being racist.

As politely as possible. Never do anything to set "them" off. People filled with hate, will do most anything. See if your parents agree with you, first, then talk to them about this. They may or may not be able to do anything.
Also - you have college to look forward to, you won't live there forever. Also friends are a great source of strength, instead of going it alone.
As your second answer shows, from Cowboy Bill - many will give you a hard time, or worse. Talk to your family, teachers, people that have similar ideas like you.
I still advise caution when talking to people until you know them real well. Look forward to college, and traveling.
Oh, are they real racist - or class clowns? Children only know what their parents set up as right and wrong, but the class clown pushes decency, as part of their routine.

I have had to deal with it on many levels and there are a few responses.
1. Get up and stand up for what you believe. Tell them, in a nice way if you must but it is more fun to call them all rednecks, that thier attitudes are archaic and backwater.
2. Dont say anything and just know that you are in the right, taking solace in that fact
3. Start a big fight and beat up some of the bigger racists.
I can tell you which one Martin Luther King JR. Would have picked.

My daughter has also run into this problem. She does her best to live as an example to others of acceptance. She got so mad because a teacher showed a video of starving African kids and a few of the girls just giggled and laughed and gossiped through the whole thing. We live in a rural community so she deals with a lot of ignorance. She tries to open others eyes to issues but if she can't, she tries to let it slide off her back.

We ALL judge. And we are ALL products of our conditioning (what we've been taught). If you can, try to have some compassion for the racists. Realize that we engage in the same mechanism of demonizing the other when we judge racists. If we're unwilling to think this is true, then how can we expect a racist to consider his/her concepts? I'm white and married a black woman and have championed black rights for decades. I also wasn't self-aware enough to realize how much I demonized those whom I identified as 'racist' - I was engaging in the SAME dynamic! I then was humbled when, despite my incredible love for my wife and her extended family, I saw very significant racist thoughts and attitudes come up in me about kids, etc. What I did was, I didn't make myself feel guilty for these thoughts and didn't try to make them unreal. Instead, I realized I needed to accept them, look at them, cut myself some slack, and just keep an open mind and expose myself to situations more and more (and ask for some internal guidance). I realized how I couldn't judge a racist -- they were products of their conditioning and that's it. If we judge, we support the very mechanism that is at the foundation of racism: the separation from others. Just look for the love in 'racists' and don't judge them; the rest will follow.

Yea I deal everyday. There is a few on this site. But, you no what, you really can't change the world. But you can lead your life in such a way that people see the light in you and want to follow and emulate you. Be a leader not a follower. But there are going to be racist out there of every color. I just aint got time for them.

There really isn't a way to stop people from believing that they are superior
Chris Rock in the Movie Dogma said it best
"I wish religions were more of ideas then beliefs. Changing an idea is easier but a belief is trickier."
even though this doesn't have much to do with religion, sort of, the concept is still the same.
and who is Emmit Till.
This can help my history completion project

Could it be that these children (and they ARE CHILDREN) are the type who haven't matured enough to realize that something heroic and also Noble is above their little narrow immature minds) YES I DEAL WITH GROWNUPS EVERYDAY who are as immature as a 12yr old, So DO NOT GROUP ALL INTO WHAT yOU CALL RACIST !! The way you deal with these 1%'s is to ignore them and focus on the other 99% whether they be Black ,White,Red orYellow

Black people are the pupils of the eyes, let them show the ways for the rest of the town.
I remember quite well the lesson I got from a respectful black man from Uganda. I admired him so much that I invited scores of my friends to come at our meeting, but only 2 have come. At seeing my sadness of this failure, he said "Don't be sad. Christ had only 12 disciples, who am I to expect anything greater?"
