4 is a fine number...
pre-season is about testing out new strategies, new players, even new coaches.

When it comes to the NFL - it's all about money.
NFL aside...
we schedule as many pre-season games as possible (sadly 2 at most) because we have depth and want to test our players to see who the real starters will be for the season.
But we also have scrimmages that help a little.

I think they should have two. That's plenty of time to evaluate talent, get the starters sharp, and reduce the injuries. The only reason there are four pre-season games is money. The owners charge FULL price for tickets and pull in good ratings on TV. All this equates to more money for owners.

Some have suggested turning the final two pre-season games into regular season games, making the season an 18 game season. This way the owners still get their money and we get to see and enjoy real games as opposed to the glorified scrimmages. The drawback to this proposal is the fact that the NFL records will be counterfeited as everyone will get two more games to add to their stats. A 1000 yard rushing season or 1000 yard receiving season will mean very little in an 18 game season.

Just went to my first pre-season game and will never do it again. Can't even watch pres eason for more than 30 minutes. Saw the starters play maybe 1-2 quarters and then guys I never even heard of, or will ever again.

The point to the preface is that yes the preseason is fine for the coaches to evaluate talent. However the major issue these days is players getting hurt for no reason. Think they need a couple of quarters to get up to game speed but thats about it. So, with that said yes it's too long in my opinion, But, who cares just don't watch and don't go to the games if you don't care. Then maybe it will change if what the last answerer said was true that it's just for the owners squeezing some ticket dollars for the same sallary of 16 regular season games.

Preseason games have their uses, but four is too many. Cut it back to two, because there is just to many oppurtunities for injury, and to the players themselves, there isn't that much benefit. Most of the rookies (especially if they came out of the SEC) have played for bigger crowds on a low attendance day than any professional game (including the Superbowl) will ever see. (On an unrelated note, isn't it interesting that with all of the money that a professional game draws, they will barely fill 60,000 seats, while [insert favorite SEC stadium here] has a six month waiting list for 96,000?) After a couple of games to loosen everyone up and get them out of training camp mode and into game mode, let the season rip.

The coaches don't come right out and say it, but most of them would like to see preseason cut back as well.

Way too many! It isn't worth it to lose great athletes in the preseason. Two games is more than enough for coaches to play prospective players and make decisions. The only reason for 4 preseason games is to line the owners' pockets--like they need more $$$! Heck, I'd rather see less preseason games and more regular season games!

Not necessarily,it just depends on the head coach plays the team during the preseason whether they chose to play there starters for extend periods of the game, but the good part of the preseason you get to see the rookies and new players to the team

Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes! The owners don't pay the players during exhibitions so they reap mega bucks off the ticket sales. This will never change as the owners have the best fraternity on the face of the earth.
