NGO is the common term for "non governmental organization", which takes too long to say, and this is shortened to the convenient accronym NGO

but what about "government organizations"? Is there are a short way to abbreviation them and say them in common speech? You could simply drop the "N" and call them "GOs" but unfortunately that sounds too much like the word "go" as in "let's go to the movies"

What else could we call them for short?

I think this is because governmental organizations can be grouped easily under the umbrella term "government" in general (the FBI is part of the US federal bureaucracy, etc.) -- NGOs (and IGOs) are separate from individual governments and take on an identity that is distinct from "intra" government organizations. There needs to be a separate term for NGOs and IGOs.

Yes you can shortened to GO for government organizatio such as UNO,Unicef,WHO,WB (World Bank),ADB (Asian Develop-
ment Bank),IDB(Islamic Development Bank) etc.In military and police organization in Indonesia use many abbreviations like that.
I think in many countries usually use the abbreviation in order to shortened the written materials and in speeches too if most of the members of society have known its length.

You must realize that one of the requirements for any government organization is to have a highly complicated name to distinguish themselves from any other government organization. Most of them already have acronyms to identify them because it's too clumsy to use their full name in normal conversation... Examples... DOT for Department of Transportation;
NASA for National Air and Space Administration; DOD for Department of Defense, etc

There are already names for them. NGO is a catchall. The GO catchall is government.
