There is a theatre about 10 miles away from me. It's not much, and the name of it is "Pulaski Fine Arts Association." Do I have to audition for a role at a local theatre? Or can anyone be in it? Sorry I have so many questions. Thanks.

You really have to call and ask them. Some community theaters will use anyone who shows up. Many others do audition. Some auditions ask you for material that you have prepared on your own, and others will ask you to read from the script of the play. Go and have a great time!

You will need to audition. Contact the theater group and they can give you the audition information. Usually the audition will be a "cold reading" of a scene or two of the character(s) you are interested in playing. (If you want to cheat, get your hands on a copy of the script and read it through in advance so you have some idea who the character is and what is happening in the scene.) If it is a musical, you may also be asked to sing (normally they will have a song that everyone rehearses as a group a few times first) and do a couple dance steps they will teach you at the audition.

If the director perfers you come with a prepared monologue instead, they will tell you that in advance of the audition. Some groups also like you to bring in a "headshot" photo of yourself for their records. (Often they will take the photos at the audition).

As you are "unknown" to the group, do not be suprised if they only offer you a small role the first time. Most groups will not take a chance on giving the lead to an unknown. But as you are male - and willing - they will normally offer you a part. (Men are hard to get in local theater).

In addition to acting, they can also use willing hands to do set construction, painting, sound, lighting, backstage things, etc. If they do not have a part for you onstage, they can put you to work backstage. (That we they get to know you, make sure you are reliable, and next play will be more comfortable offering you a part).

But I do encourage you to make the call and get involved. There is nothing like the thrill of the theater.

If they don't know you, you will most likely have to read for a role. Once in a while, you may be handed a role without an audition if they are desperate for an actor. As a director, I can tell you I wouldn't cast an actor I didn't know without an audition. Even actors I do know must go through the audition process and earn their part, unless it's an emergency situation. The director has to see if you can read the lines successfully. Call and ask for their season schedule, audition requirements (monologue, cold reading, etc), and to be put on their mailing list.

By the way, I was curious about the location of this theatre (there is a Pulaski in TN as well). You will find a section about upcoming auditions on the website. Hope you do it.

Yes, you still need to audition. Plays have only a certain amount of characters, and even if the only the amount of people to come out was the same as characters, you would still need to audition for a specific character
