Secretary work will never be particularly lucrative because the work is relatively unskilled and doesn't require a high degree of education. Teaching requires at least a BA degree. With the pension benefits teaching will give you a middle class lifestyle. If you happen to be good at math or science you could do well because these areas are typically understaffed. English is particularly hard to find a teaching position in because many English majors look to teaching to pay the bills.

The best advice I can give anyone thinking about future studies is to study something you're interested in. Almost always this will be the right choice because if you're interested you will learn lots.

I don't think you need a degree to do secretarial work. I don't have mine yet and that's what I do. Teaching involves a lot of organization (you have to have lesson plans set up weeks in advance) so that might be good. Major in something like liberal arts if you want to teach elementary school or pick a subject you would like to teach (like English or history) and major in that with a minor in something that might help with it (like English and History, science and math, french and spanish). Also, you don't have to declare a major as soon as you get to school. Take the first year and just take GEs and figure out what interests you the most. You might find something new that you haven't been exposed to before that you'll love.

You stated that you "would like something to keep you well financially". Secretarial work does not pay a lot of money so if you are looking for a job that makes more money that will not be it. You can be organized as a teacher so give education a shot.

Why not consider working in education administration? This gives you the opportunity to work with kids or young people while still doing the administrative functions like the "organizations, paperwork and repetitive things" you mentioned.
