My cars have been vandalized by mice who build nests inside the engine compartment and gnaw on the coolant and washer fluid containers. They did about $500 in damages.

how long were your cars parked? You may have better luck putting out bowls of water. It won't get rid of them, but at least they won't need to chew on your car to get water.

Yes, that is a legitimate rodent repellant, but if they are highly motivated they may ignore it. I would first wash down the engine to get rid of the mouse smell, maybe rinse with diluted vinegar to neutralise the ammonia. You need to cut down the number of mice in your environment! I don't recommend poison because it is too easy to kill pets without really getting the mice that much. My favorite trap is the "rat zapper," it's clean, reusable, but expensive. Regular traps are cheaper. You may have to do some real work on this problem. Some people have rats, not mice. The best repellant I know is a real cat shut in the garage with the car at night.
