Tough Question...
Actually , this is often disputed. Since people of European backgrounds settled the Plains and West, a place that was already settled and thriving, accounts are mixed. Complicating matters are that many "plains" First Nation tribes were resettled in Oklahoma after walking the "Trail of Tears" from the East/Southeast. Thus, a lot of the data is skewed. For example, the Tribe know as the Cherokee is often associated with the Plains States, yet is actually from the Southeast-- I believe GA. region, but I am not 100 percent sure. Also, the idea of the Plains is different to everyone-- is Colorado, my home state, a Plains State? I say no, but a lot of people would argue yes. Best to consult with the Denver Art Museum website-- it has the largest collection of First Nation Art in the world. They may have a more definitive answer.

I can't give you a definite number, but will give you some of the major Nations of the Great Plains.

Such as Sarcee, Plains Cree, Blackfoot, Plains Ojibwa, Assiniboin, Gros Ventre, Crow, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara, Ponca, Cheyenne, Lakota, Dakota, Nakota (Sioux), Omaha, Arapaho, Pawnee, Oto, Kansa, Wichita, Kiowa, Kiowa-Apache, Comanche, Osage, Quapaw, and Caddo.

Undoubtedly there were more much earlier in our history, but some may have been swallowed up either in marriage or killing.
