To put a true figure on that question is beyond me. Yes some figures put it in the trillions and they in way are not wrong. There is a huge amount owed to the USA by other nations as well. I have not found any figures for this that actually show the true amount. Much of the money is in loans and the nations are paying interest. The money market is so complicated that I doubt if any person actually knows the true figures. Often nations are given loans to purchase products of the USA. Just how does this fit in the outstanding debt. I sure have no idea the true figure of the national debt to other nations. The figure given by the government only shows one side of the coin. This coin has more than just heads and tails. It just may be that others owe the USA as much or it might be more than the USA owes to them. Europe still owes the USA a large bundle and have not been very responsible about paying it. Also the national debt is much more than just what foreign nations owe the USA. The numbers are staggering and it is beginning to look like this system will collapse one day.

The US Gov't website in the source will answer your question in detail.
China is said to hold close to 1 trillion dollars in US securities, while Japan holds about the same. That's just two countries. Countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait also own huge amounts. Pretty much, we can say that the US is in hock to the rest of the world. The rest of the world is like a pawn shop where the US has handed over it's assets for a few pieces of silver (actually, paper money).

Where it comes from is a complicated game in which the US Treasury and various other players internal to the USA all agree to owe each other money

We owe money to other countries? I thought that the other countries owed us money?
If we do owe money, I imagine we have a hard time paying it due to the money owed to us.

Oh now, that's just crazy talk. We owe nothing to anyone. It's all a big convoluted bunch of figures politicians come up with every now and then in order to pacify whoever feels ripped off at the time.

About 3 trillion.
You will hear other numbers, but most of our debt is owed to American people holding Government Bonds.
Now, what country has most of that debt??? Brazil.

If you care to dig, it's in the link below from the treasury department. Personally, I think the problem is worse than is shown, b/c so much is done off budget.
