What is the difference in water and oil based lubricant? I heard that oil was bad for you. Is there really a difference?

Oh well I actually just had my 2nd baby and on birth control but hubby and I are going on a cruise for a week so I just wanted to have some fun. But wasn't sure if there was a difference.

The main problem with the oil is that it can cause condoms to break down. However, that said, the water based lubricants are much, much better to use. They are much more like your body's natural lubricants as far as slipperiness. Just rub a bit between your fingers and compare it with baby oil to see what I mean. Water-based ones also don't interfere with the natural flora of the vagina like oil based ones will. AstroGlide is a very good one, but there are others.

First and foremost, Oil-Based lubricants should never be used with a latex condom. Oil breaks down the condom in a matter of moments and increases the risk of condom breakage and fluid transmission. Water-Based lubricants are safe to use with all condoms and can be reactivated with water or body fluids. So if you dry out, just add water. Silicone-Based lubricants are not only safe to use with all condoms, but, because they are not made of water, do not dry out. These lubes can be used underwater or for romping in the sheets.
Water-Based lubricants are made up of about 90% deionized water in which a glycerin (an emollient), a polymer (for the slip slide) and an antibacterial agent are added. Some lubes include Nonoxynol-9 (see below), and others use Benzalkonium Chloride as a Spermicide and many have added flavor or scent.

The silicone lubricants are made from Cyclomethicone, Dimethiconol, Silicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate).

Oil based lubricants are petroleum based and should never be used with latex.

The use of a lubricant on the inside of a condom can make the sensations delivered to the penis much stronger.
Prior to the current, safer-sex era, many people used oil-based lubricants, using vaseline or mineral oil. Neither of these are particularly healthy; petroleum-based oils destroy latex upon contact, making them useless for use with condoms. Oils also coat the inside of the vagina and rectum, providing a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. Even monogamous couples who don't have to worry about safer sex should avoid using oils for this reason, as well as one other: if it destroys the latex of condoms, it will also destroy the latex of diaphragms, cervical caps, and sponges, as well as the protective coatings around some IUDs.

"Best lubricant" is a non-sequitor, since lubricant choice is as personal to taste as food. Some people like it thick, others runny, others need it to be slick enough to grease their engines and others need it to last long enough to go for hours. Small sampler bottles (1 oz.) are available for a dollar apiece-- buy one of each and try them out. Figure out which one you like best.

Have Fun!

I'm a guy and use both but usually when I give it to my girl in the back I use oil. You're welcome.
Edit: It actually depends where your hubby is giving it to you. If you've had your 2nd baby I'm assuming you're not virgin tight down there to need any lube. If he's giving it to you in the other place go with oil but no condom.

I think it's simply a matter of preference if you're using BCP's and not condoms. Oil is messier and gets everywhere, and the new lubes are so much better.

Its not really BAD for you per se. However it is messy and difficult to clean up and will break down rubber so don't use it if you're going to use a condom.
