You can coat your baby's butt in cream all day long, but there is no "product" that can substitute for the best diaper rash prevention: parental attention! The simple fact of the matter is sitting in wet or soiled diapers causes skin irritation, and the best prevention is to keep the baby's delicate skin clean.
Also, getting plenty of airflow is important. If there is any way to give your child some time without a diaper on, that will help.
If you want a time-tested method for preventing diaper rash, take a look at Elimination Communication

I have used this with my fourth child, and my baby girl. It really does work great!

Aquaphor!!! I love it and its doctor recommended. Its sort of like vaseline but with something extra. I use it on my baby. She is only a few months old but has never had a diaper rash. THe only bad thing about it is it's more pricey than regular diaper rash. Also, an old remedy for diaper rash is cornstarch. You should get this book my husband got me. Its called The Mom book and has answers for everything from doctors and other parents. I love it. Good luck!

The best stuff in the world is AMMENS powder. It's not made for diaper rash though. Our pediatrician recommended it and it works great. My daughter started getting a diaper rash, I put it on there when she got out of the bath, and by in the morning it was gone. It also works wonder for heat rashes

If you want a powder of some sort then I would suggest pure corn starch like the kind that you use in cooking. If you are looking for a cream the I would suggest either A&D ointment or the huggies diaper rash cream. Both work great on my daughter.

one way to prevent diaper rash is to chage your child as soon as he/she is wet or dirty..the reason the bacteria doesn't have a chance to irritate the delicate skin. make sure you are using the correct size diaper, they should fit snug, if they are too tight it prevents air flow and holds in the wettness closer to the skin causing irritaion. i have also found that letting their little bottoms air out a little (with a diaper under them) before putting on a new diaper helps as well as folding over the top front of the diaper after fastening it. this little trick allows the air to flow. i have used these simple preventitive measures on my daughter (9months old) and i have not had an issue with diaper rash. (knock on wood) :) hope this helps

Vaseline and cornstarch. both work well to prevent diaper rash.
I'm incontinent and wear diapers 24 / 7 and I've never had a rash by using both.
They also work well after the fact as well as a good medicated powder will.
Good luck.

Do not use baby powder - they have done studies and found it can be very harmful to babies' lungs. I use Boudreaux's Butt Paste - after each diaper change. Works like a charm. My two year old has never had a diaper rash. Funny name, I know, but it works great!

#1 choice: cloth diapers and wool covers
#2 choice: less absorbant disposables (because you will change the baby more often, but it wont help if your baby is having rash due to chemicles in the diaper)
also you want to look into what kind of rash it is, yeast is very common but it can be caused by the diaper being too big or too small, as well as food allergies, or just not enough air getting to the baby's bum.

I thought my daughters daddy was crazy when he came home with bagbalm. But my baby had a bad rash that was to the point it was/looked like it would bleed. We put that on it and the rash was almost gone within 2 days. We used it after as a preventative care item. Its a little expensive but works wonders. Vasaline works great too.
