Not especially visible, that's a hoax. There *was* a close pass of Mars in 2003. The next close passage will not be for another 60 years or so. Even so, it did not look startlingly different, just a brighter red dot compared to its usual appearance.

Mars will never look like, say, the Moon does from Earth.... or, if it does, we know we are in VERY serious trouble!!!

No Mars. Mars is on the far side of the Sun this month and not visible at all. The E-mail that said it would be close August 27 was a hoax.

Yes it can be visible. I don't know if we can see it tonight. But it is definitely visible as skyobservers long time ago found Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn that look like stars in the sky but are "moving stars". Scientists found Neptune and Uranus and Pluto later with the help of telescopes.

On the far side of the Sun at the moment. Lost in the glare of the Sun. Not visible again till December 2006. Next close approach: late December 2007, It is visible for about 8 months a year on average. Because a Martian year is about 1.88 Earth years, i.e. our orbits are not in phase with one another.

Hi Alyssa. Don't ask me why, but I was drawn to your question (even though I don't know the answer) because I think I have something important to tell you. I am from a large (and sort of strange) family that have lived in the same village for nine generations. We have some mystical powers and I believe I am supposed to use that power to tell you something. I do not fully understand this, but I believe it will make sense to you. Here goes: "you have the right idea about the choice you need to make. Go with your first instinct." Does that make any sense? I hope so. Please let me know because maybe I will "see" some more or have another helpful word for you. And wow, you must be pretty mystical yourself to have attracted me so strongly. Are you a psychologist or scientist? Is blue your favourite colour?

No mars.

Not for another 3 or 4 months.

It's a lie.

Someone sent you an e-mail 12 months too late!

It's all over and done with.

You'll have to wait another 14,000 years to see it again!

But cheer up, in about 15 years it will be "somewhat" close again.
